Policy for Student Research Travel Funds, Department of Surgery

Thanks to the generosity of the Department of Surgery, medical students are able to apply for research related travel funds to attend national conferences if a submitted abstract is accepted for either poster or oral presentations.

These funds should supplement the Office of Medical Education travel funds, not be in lieu of that funding.  First step, please check with your medical school counselor to discuss those funding options. Once you secure those funds, we will consider covering additional expenses: airfare, lodging and registration/ membership fees.  We will not cover meals, ground transportation or incidentals such as tips.

Next step, please submit a funding proposal to Karla Robinson,  Funding requests will be reviewed on a first-come first-served basis.  Applications for funding will be accepted on a rolling basis.

Only complete funding proposals will be reviewed:

  • Description of proposed activity (conference name, location, date)
  • Attach a copy of the abstract accepted; include your UofM Department of Surgery faculty mentor; faculty must be senior author on abstract
  • Detailed Budget (airfare, hotel, registration fee)

Budget guidelines:

  • When creating your budget, please select an inexpensive hotel within walking distance to the conference.  It can be at the conference center itself as long as it is a reasonable rate (discuss with Karla Robinson).
  • Airfare can be a direct flight to your destination, but must be made at least 14 days before the start of the conference.
  • Registration and/or membership fees will be covered.
  • Please include in your budget travel funds from the Medical School if applicable

Each year students working within our group may compete for the Darrell A Campbell Jr. MD award for student surgical research.  This award includes a stipend to attend a national meeting.
